Anyhow, here is a picture of my LAN setup:

Wired and Wireless
Canon 20D

I’m showing this because I’m planning on writing a how-to on setting up a home LAN, wired and wireless. In the picture above, you can see a slightly overkill 24 port patch panel, a wireless router, a too small 8 port switch, and the cable modem. Ahh, the tech life. Sadly, I never got around to putting a port in the kitchen and one in the living room. Why wired? Well, as much as I love wireless, some of the devices I have are wired (print server), and quite often I have a machine home with me that needs to be worked on, and it, conveniently, doesn’t have a wireless card. And because, well, the cost was about the same. Oh, and doesn’t EVERYONE want ethernet ports in their walls?

It is overkill – though I’ve since used 12 of the 24 ports (upgraded the 8 port switch as well). Wireless coverage from the basement only reaches the first floor, and third directly above. I would rather have gotten a 16 port patch panel, but at the time couldn’t find anything on eBay that was inexpensive as the 24 patch panel.
